I've had a very similar experiece recently when I black & whitened shots of 
golden sculptures from the Einsiedeln monastery. It must be the noble metal 
gold. It's only noble with color. Grey it looks just like rather unnoble 
plaster. Fiddling the greytones is useless alchemy! :-)
