What happened was that the hosting company I use renewed my hosting package for another year, and as usual charged it to my credit card, but I forgot that the renewal of the domain was not automatic in the same way. To make matters worse, the admin e-mail address they had on file was one that I had cancelled during the past year, and so I never received any of their inquiries about renewing the domain. Now I have renewed it for 5 years, so things should be safe for now...
