Yes indeed Walter actually studied under Mahler. My favourite reading of The 
Song of the Earth is his. His recordings are of "historic" quality!

Bruno Walter was a prot?g? of Mahler - he worked with Mahler - but there is
scant copies of his works available

I would say it was Bruno Walter, though maybe he is less well known  
in the USA???????
