As to Brahms, give a listen to his German (Deutsches) Requiem.  It's 
pretty much got it all; big score, big choir, big scope, big melody and 
plenty of emotion.

He referred to Beethoven as "The Giant" and downplayed his own talent.  
But the Requiem is, if anything, a work that Beethoven would probably 
given the nod to.

Bruckner takes some getting used to, but his symphonic tonalities are 
haunting.

and oh, The Ring Cycle; that's pretty serious up here, too...)
