Hi Ric:

I don't know why it was built that way, perhaps they just wanted 
something a little more interesting than the usual straight waterfall.

To the left of the falls, past the big rock, is a now dry "canal" of 
some sort where I'm guessing was located a waterwheel to power something 
in the small white building with the flowers, (now a home).
