Maybe they were more comfortable with round than we commonly believe.  
After all, it's common (and erroneous) knowledge that Columbus was  
one of the few who believed the world round.

Looking at the picture made me realize that the dry brush filter in  
PhotoShop may be a good way to simulate heat shimmer.
