Barney - It was blowing 20-25 when that picture was taken. The waves and whitecaps don't look so bad because the wind was behind us and you're looking at the wave backs. I wouldn't read too much into their relative positions. The boat ahead isn't a true cat and I probably shouldn't have identified her as such in my write up, now that I think about it. That boat is "Swallows and Amazons," a traditional gaff-rigged sloop. You can see her better in pix 4. There were about a half-dozen true catboats in the race and I was amazed at how well they handled the conditions. I love catboats. Do you have a picture of yours? Where do you sail her?
