I think Adam has it, I lost mine temporarily because the external HD  
could not be found, you have to direct Aperture to the library - bet  
that's what happened to you.  Go to Preferences, right at the top  
Image Management, it has the library location - and you can choose  
where it should look.

As far as I know, Aperture is not set up to delete a photo unless you  
ask it to do so.
