I think it is best to use a seperate scanner for negs, but might I suggest
something?

 If the scanner is too slow, then it is probably making the conversion to
positive during the scan.

Try scanning the negative as a positive, then inverting it in Photoshop.  If
your eye is good, you can even adjust the image as a negative before you
invert it to positve.  It makes the scan MUCH faster.
