The 6 bit encoding tells the camera what the focal length is and the camera then can tell where the aperture ring is. The optical sensor can then do a little character recognition and tell what the current aperture is. The camera doesn't even have to do all the calculation, it can encode the little bitmap of what it sees in the EXIF data and host PC program can do the character recognition. Never challenge a geek on the "possibility."
