Ouch!

Last October I was at my old alma mater for homecoming (1st time since I
graduated). Staying at a La Quinta Inn (everything else in town was booked
as I decided to go last minute).

Upon returning to my room and stooping for the doorknob, my Domke strap
slipped off my shoulder and my M3 / VC Meter and 50mm Summicron DR fell 2
feet or less to the concrete sidewalk. As with yours, it took about 10
minutes to hit, but there was nothing I could do to save it. I looked it
over and it all seemed fine. However, when I got ready to change rolls of
film, I discovered that the film side of the camera had been dented ever so
minutely - but enough to prevent me from unloading / loading film. I called
around and was told the camera was toast, so I bought an M5 - which I'd been
wanting ever since I bought my M3. The size is right for my hands and the
spot meter is wonderful.

Anyway, a good friend and a member of this group suggested that all might
not be lost. He is a machinist among other things and felt he could re-bend
the brass back to its original form. I sent it to him and a few weeks later
it returned as good as new. So now, along with my M5 and CLE, I have my
original M3 again as well. Now I carry slide, b/w and high speed wherever I
happen to be.

It sounds as if you've done something similar - using this as an excuse to
get another body. Consider this an opportunity. ;-)

But still, I feel you pain.
