100% correct Gene.....   But there is no good solution save using one of 
those half cases from Luigi.....

I had a couple of M3 lugs replaced a few years ago, and the price was not 
all that bad.....  It is a cost of using the lugs.....

A few years ago, I remember having a strap that used some form of fabric to 
go through the lugs....maybe it was fancy string, I
forget.  But I do not trust that methodology.  The best solution is to have 
something that will not allow my camera to fal l on the
floor, and to me that means metal rings with woven nylon fabric straps.

The leather pieces do not protect the lug from the O ring split ends, they 
protect the body only, which dig into the lugs and tear
them up.  I've had several Nikon lugs torn to the point they needed 
replacement.  Never again for me.
