Phil,

I have a bottle of cask strength Laphroaig that I'm saving for a
special occasion. Have you tried the Ardbeg? The 17 is amazing. The
10 is also pretty awesome.

I was just about to say that Middleton Very Rare was what you should

but then looking at your comments about the price decided that there
are a
few good alternatives at a much lower price. (I still have only
bought one
bottle ever in my life as almost $200 is quite an investment in a
whiskey,
no matter how fine.)
I like the old Bushmills Single Malt 10. It's warm, with no bite.
The 16
yr old Bushmills Single Malt has a little bit more wood to the
taste. It's
definitely a great whiskey, but I prefer the 10. It's like carmel going
down. For the garden variety sipping whiskey, the Jameson single
malt is
good and for a blend, my favorite is Tullamore Dew.

If he's a scotch fan, Laphroaig is a wonderful, very complex,
whiskey. Lots
of peat in the flavor and it's best brought out on special
occasions. My
downstairs neighbor always has a stock of it and brings up the bottle
once
in a while to share a dram.

Good luck!
Philip

My son does love a good glass of Irish whiskey and I want to buy a
good bottle (here in California) to celebrate his return to
silly-vilian life.

I don't drink it very much, mostly because I never think to try it,
and I'm looking for recommendations for while I offer him. I was
thinking I'd get him two or three bottles of rather different whiskeys
so he can make up his mind about what he might enjoy. I think the
Jameson Midleton is a bit beyond what I wanted to spend - by a factor
of three or so.

Thanks for sharing.

And now back to your single malts...

Adam
