If he likes a peated single malt there's Connemara peated malt but my guess would be that if he prefers Irish to Scotch then he'd prefer an unpeated malt. Other brands to consider would be Locke's or Tyrconnell. The other option would be a pure pot still whiskey. Like a single malt it is made from barley and only barley, the difference being that some of the barley is "malted" and some is "unmalted". Malting is the process where the barley is allowed to partially germinate to boost the flavour by stimulating the conversion of starch to sugar. Then this process is halted by roasting the grain. Grains where the germination is stopped by roasting over an open peat fire is called a peated malt. I would stay away from blended whiskeys which is most of what's on the market. This is whiskey made partly from barley and partly from spirits based on lesser grains. Hope this helps. Slaint? I don't drink it very much, mostly because I never think to try it, and I'm looking for recommendations for while I offer him. I was thinking I'd get him two or three bottles of rather different whiskeys so he can make up his mind about what he might enjoy. I think the Jameson Midleton is a bit beyond what I wanted to spend - by a factor of three or so. Thanks for sharing. And now back to your single malts...
