Gary, you're right there's nothing magical about it.  The 35mm frame  
size matters most to people who have lenses that will cover that size.

The thing about size is that given equivalent technological  
developments, a larger sensor will yield better image quality.  No I  
don't always need  the better image quality but when I need to crop a  
lot having a reserve of image quality available will make the  
difference between a usable photo and one that I don't want to show  
in public.  The male Western Bluebird I posted this week was cropped  
from horizontal, for example.  The Tundra Swan on final approach that  
I posted several weeks ago was severely cropped.  With film I'd have  
tried a 645 camera except I wasn't willing to carry the lenses  
equivalent to my 280, 400 and 560mm Telyts.
