Jon,

Union cards were not all that much help.  In the South around 1950, we had a 
15-piece big band in college and did well with college dances.  We all 
carried union cards.  Then, when small combos became popular and began to 
undercut our bookings, we complained to the union and they did nothing. 
Those non-union combos marked the end of the big band era.
