I still have and use my Minolta color temperature meter - mostly to  
check the digital equipments WB choices.
        But having:
                1) grown up with using CC & LB filters to arrive at intended 
 
results on film.
                2) early pro video projects where WB was a significant issue.
WB in the digital capture world seems just as important as it ever  
did. And fine technique is part of the joy of photography whether  
digital, film, still, motion, etc.
