Aperture makes heavy use of the GPU. The iMac's GPU isn't as high-end as the more recent versions and so it's not able to do as much. I was incorrect in an earlier post about Aperture and DNG. Aperture DOES read DNG files but it doesn't read LEICA DNGs except to extract the jpeg information stored as a preview. Even using the Adobe DNG conversion utility doesn't fix this. I note that people are clambering for it on the Apple site so hopefully there will be a change in an upcoming OS release - perhaps 10.4.9 as the most likely near-term candidate.
