That has been an option for many years on cameras with built in motors.  
My ancient F4s did that...heck I think even the motor on my really 
ancient F1n did that on single shot mode.  press to shoot and the 
advance when you release the button.

I have my 1DII set up this way now on single shot mode, it does make the 
noise less objectionable.
