Thanks, George.  That's exactly what I have.  The cable modem is 
hooked up to it and then a blue cable hooks a port on the back of 
that router up to the old laptop.  There are four ports in the back 
of the router but I'm only using one for the laptop.  I thought it 
had to be hooked up to something to work.  If not and it will work 
not connected to the computer, that's great and is perfect.  I don't 
know why it quit working when the laptop went off but maybe it was 
just a glitch.  My new laptop has built-in wireless receivers and 
software. I'll definitely try it this week.
