I got to play with the 300 f2  a good bit about 15 years ago. A 
friend of mine used to shoot for the local daily - mostly high school 
football and such. His 300 f2.8 broke during football season and, 
since he was an NPS member, Nikon express shipped a loaner lens. It 
seems that they were out of 300/2.8's , so they sent him the 300/2.0. 
He had it for about 3 or 4 months. The novelty of having the biggest 
lens in town soon wore off for him, since  it weighed something like 
20 or 25 pounds. The photos were beautiful from it, but  it really 
was overkill for H.S. football, even here  in Alabama. He did have 
fun at the local university ( Auburn) games, though. Even the Sports 
Illustrated guys gave him a little extra room.

I don't think that NPS sends out that kind of equipment anymore
