David,

I agree that a 50 and a 2x converter can be a very useful setup on an SLR. 
Not blessed with a Leica SLR, I used a 50mm f/1.4 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 
and a 2x converter for a flower close-up and received mixed comments on this 
approach.  I see no problem in this approach to achieving the results one 
would normally get with a 100mm lens.
