Peter,
The image you don't understand is a snow shovel buried under a ton of oak
leaves.  Even Kansas City gets very directional light most of the day and I
had time for two frames before the call to get to the airport so I could not
do much about the high contrast but try to use a tri-tone to add back the
reddish tint of dead oak leaves.
