All of the above, plus disk access speed.

I bought an HP-something or other about 10 months ago when I decided I was
going digital. Spent about $1000 on the computer (already had a perfectly
good monitor.) Came with 2g of memory. I wanted to go with 4g, but they
didn't have any in stock. If you don't have tons of pictures open at a time
nor running other memory hogs simultaneously, 2g is ample. I have a dual
core 2.8 GHz processor. I'm not processor bound on most tasks. When
running a batch action on a folder, I am. But I'm also not sitting in front
of my computer waiting impatiently, either. I get up and walk away. Or
read email. Like now. :)

If there were one thing I would upgrade about my computer right now it would
be to run two monitors at the same time. That way, you can keep your
palettes and info windows on one screen and use the full screen on the other
for the picture itself. At some point, I probably will do that.

Don't buy the slowest system you find, but I would recommend against buying
the most expensive, too. The best performance while being somewhat fiscally
responsible is usually in the midrange boxes. $1000 is more than adequate
to buy a decent PC these days. I'd spend other money on monitors, software,
or other camera equipment.
