Jeffery I think that your guess on the median age might actually be very
close. Someone had a bar graph on that in one gallery.
GeeBee perhaps? Your comment regarding the other forums is surprising, given
that there is meant to be an RF revival. Just proves
that the numerous posts on musk apes, kippers, Belgian beer et al are a
vital part of our LUG society. The stuff contrary to
personal preference or opinion is easily converted to acceptable by our
friend, the Delete key.
Regarding Brian's remarks on the M8 and its affect on membership, perhaps
all of those that have strayed from the true path and
bought OT DSLRs will be gradually trading up and Leica use will be stronger
than ever amongst the LUG ites! Regarding the digital vs
film content issue, clearly everything posted on the LUG is digital content
(whether scanned or captured by sensor), irrespective of
source. I think it is an ongoing mission for all of those using Leica gear
to post work of such obviously superior quality, that
those waverers must see the light ;-)

Actually, I meant the average age of Leica subscribers would be 50. ;-)

If I were a statistician with a lot of time on my hands, I would go back and
see which proportion of posts were pure Leica and which were digital, war,
Scotch, etc.

But Leica is doing okay compared to some others. The CVUG and RF lists used
to have quite a few posts. Lately, you can hear the crickets on those
forums.

I completely agree with Jeffery's comment regarding the moribund 35mm SLRs
market. Although it does mean that there are many bargains out there on the
Bay, for those committed enough to be countercyclical. I must comment,
though on two other things, Jeffery. Won't that new subscriber be the third
1000th?? Up, down, up again ;-) and did you really say the number of pure
Leica subscribers would be 50!!! Some sort of Freudian slip there ;-) Cheers
Hoppy

That means he is the 2nd 1000th subscriber. The other one happened when the
numbers were going *down* from 2000.

I was just considering to myself what Cosina will do next, in light of the
digital influence you mention here. If you were to prohibit digital talk on
the LUG these days, I think the membership might drop to 50. It is sad to
see this happening to 35mm film cameras. If you really want to read the
handwriting on the wall, go to Adorama and try to buy a decent 35mm SLR. You
have exactly five choices: Nikon, Canon, Leica, Vivitar, and Phoenix (did I
say decent? Then we are down to Nikon, Canon, and Leica). No Pentax, no
Olympus, no Minolta. I tried to buy a 35mm Pentax SLR body a while back. I
finally had to settle for a used Pentax *ist from KEH.

A few minutes ago, someone subscribed to the LUG, and thereby (unbeknownst
to him) became the 1000th subscriber. Before the dominance of digital
cameras, LUG membership peaked at nearly 2000, but it had dropped to about
800 by midsummer 2006.

I think this was due in part to a reduced interest in film cameras, and in
part to the growth of broadband (when more people have always-on internet,
there are more messages sent). I hope our 1000th subscriber isn't driven
away by the sheer number of messages, as many newcomers are.

I'm pretty sure that the announcement of the M8 is what's triggered the
recent growth spurt in membership. Since none of us owns an M8 yet, and very
few of us have had a chance to touch one or use one, most of the traffic
about M8s has been rumor and speculation and second-guessing of its
engineering.

As the M8 becomes available, there will be more and more messages about
digital photography here on the LUG. I dearly hope that it doesn't drive
away the film stalwarts. A good picture is a good picture, regardless of
whether you took it with film or a digital sensor, with an M or an R. I've
even heard supportable claims that you can make good pictures with other
brands of camera.
