For the Arctic, we will have a cabin and can recharge there, so with enough backup batteries, we would be ok. One limiting factor I found is how long it took to download the days images to our back up. My iPod could not cope with a full 2 gig transfer and it had to be split up before I tried. A real pain and I lost images because of it.
