So...  how do you get nice tonality?  Do you go through the Channel
Mixer, or via some other route?  If Channel Mixer, do you have a
standard ratio which seems to work most of the time, or do you tweak
per-image? 

I have to admit that much of the time I'm converting to grey, it's
because a low-light image looks like ass, having come out in
blue-channel-noise-related pimples.  So I throw out the blue, and
balance red and green 'til the result looks plausible.  But I don't feel
I have it down to a science yet.
