Answered the question, thanks to a slide projector.
The green spots on the guy's shorts were tiny (and tacky) whales!  On my
two-bit scanner they appeared as blotches.  The other shiny artifacts also
disappeared upon projection.

Or, as I said at the end of the slide show, THAT'S why I still shoot film.
