It's a marketing decision rather than a technical decision. With 
Olympus, Kodak, Leica, and  Panasonic onboard, the 4/3 standard may 
have some chance of succeeding in the marketplace. There is enough 
critical mass to induce third party suppliers to produce components and 
lenses. Sort of like the 42 mm standard. You can now advertize that 
your Olympus and/or Panasonic cameras can use Leica lenses. I doubt 
that any Leicaphiles would be induced to buy if it were the other way 
around.
