Walt,
I tend to ride mass transit especially when I travel. What B.D. has shown
us is part of the ride for commuters, especially those that use a route all
the time but also for those who occasionally ride to get to a concert or
cultural activity. For the habitual riders they have their thirty/ninety
minutes on the train with a variable group of strangers. Some listen to
music, some read, some do work if there are consistently enough seats as you
would find on a PATH train into NY. For these people the scenery is the
same, the bumps are the same so they cope by doing something with their
time. For most people starting a political discussion with mostly strangers
is out of the question so society has a created a coping mechanism of
withdrawal when peoples personal space is not possible.

So, no, I don't find desolation on the trains. In fact, I usually do get
into conversations with my fellow travelers much to the embarrassment of my
family.
