I think we're having semantic problems here.
How can 'images' (good or bad) not be about 'appearances?'

appeared.
2 seem; give the impression of being : [with infinitive ] she  
appeared not to know what was happening | [with clause ] it appears  
unlikely that interest rates will fall | [with complement ] he  
appeared unaware of the rebuke.

If an image does not appear - what do we see?
