The general idea of England held by most Germans is similar - thick fogs
every second day of the year (when it's not raining),
Whether the US opinion is based on hundreds of thriller movies and
whodunits, which nearly always had fog as a prerequisite for murderous
misdeeds, I'm not sure, but a German series of Edgar Wallace thrillers
(dozens of them, mostly like bad B-movies, and nearly all starring Klaus
Kinski (Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre etc.)as a villain, or at least a perfect
prime suspect, managed to root the fog indelibly in the minds of the
German public.
The only fogs I regularly come up against are the sea-frets found on the
North Sea coast - and they are always the precursor to a wonderfully hot
afternoon.
It is also interesting to note how many people in the German media also
insist that British food is the worst in the world - and that without
ever having visited the country - it's not as if German cuisine is much
to write home about (with some glorious and delicious exceptions).
