My possibly-unhelpful answer is... get that separate card reader now.

I've had so many problems with cameras and their
plug-the-camera-in-to-the-computer modes and the weird, buggy special
software often needed to control the transfers that I never even tried
that route with my shinyish newish DMR. Stuffing the cards into an
external reader works perfectly, as it has for Canons and an Epson.

If you can find a reader for SD/MM cards with a firewire interface,
especially if you have a Mac, go for that versus a USB 2.0 one, even
though USB 2.0 may seem to be just as good or slightly better on
paper. For some reason (intrinsic communication or driver overhead?
driver maturity/tuning?) Firewire seems to be snappier and more
reliable, in my completely anecdotal experience with Macs and external
thingummies.
