Hi Mark,
I've tried a number of different years of the Distiller's Edition,
from 1974 version on, as well as the 12yr. old cask strength, and I
usually have a bottle of the 16yr. old 'standard' available. It's my
favourite distillery. :-)
The Distiller's Editions tend to be a bit softer, but they also lose
some of the strengths of the 16yr. old as they are a bit too muted.
The complexity is all there, and might even be a bit greater. The
12yr old is distinctly younger and not as full bodied. The 16yr. old
is definitely the best. Also, stay away from things like Murray David
bottlings. I've never had any of any of my favourite Scotchs from
them that I liked better than the originals. They all tended to be
flimsy and dilute in their flavours.
The 12yr. old is about $72CDN here, and the 16yr $93. The Distiller's
is about $105. In Alberta the 16yr old is about $60, so I usually
pick some up when I'm there. I found a bottle in the Canary Islands
some years ago for about $18, but they had only one - might not have
another for some time. :-)
