Alastair,

I had a similar problem.

I'm not familiar with your IR film, but I know that the Xpan that I  
used to own would not load Polapan because the film was glossy on the  
side  that faced the back of the lens (instead of matte) thereby  
confusing the loading sensor.  Hours on the phone with the Hasssy  
folks it took to figure this out.  They said there was no workaround:  
no polapan in the xpan.
