Plus there is loads of paperwork and formalities concerning your equipment and your itinerary; something that is really hard to do with out a Chinese connection/agent. As a "tourist housewife with cameras" you should have no problems but I would probably carry a 4455 with you just in case you are questioned about either buying or leaving equipment in the country.
