I've found that changes in the quality of my negatives for no particular reason seem to be tied to developer age. Unless you changed your methods of exposure or are using a different camera/lens I'd say your problem is aged developer. Kodak originally touted XTOL for it's long shelf life, but I have not found it to last any longer than other developers. Use a mixed solution within 30-45 days for best results. DDX is also great and is a "mix as you go" solution.
