If you use a PC, give iMatch a whirl. I scan my negs and label by year/month
and # (1, 2, ....).  I file the negs in sleeves and store them in 
binders on a shelf.
So far, iMatch seems quite stable. I scan negs to removable USB drives, and
iMatch keeps the thumbs/catalog database on the main HD.  iMatch has all 
sorts
of nice cataloging options.

My backup script backs up the USB drive and the catalog database to a 
network
attached large drive on a Unix machine.  Works pretty well so far.
