Well, regardless of scanner and scanner driver, I  scan greyscale, 
but in 16 bit, I make as many corrections as I can in the scanner 
software before I scan, after scanning I open in Photoshop CS, and 
make further corrections as needed, I  size, apply sharpening, and 
then convert to 8 bit before I save.
