Medium error means a problem  with the medium (the DVD disc) the
0x73/0x03 means "Power Calibration Area Error"  (this is from the SCSI
standards)

Medium error would indicate a problem with the disc, not your drive.  If
a different batch of disc's return the same error then I suggest trying
the disc's in a different drive to help determine if your drive has a
problem.
