I worked in a small advanced development group at Red Hat back around 1997 and since we were separated from the company proper we could go out and get our own supplies. We bought our own components and put them together ourselves - when I was last there those machines were still running strong though now relegated to small server status and I think one was a machine for the receptionist. Still, there is nothing like building your own machine to know where to look when something goes wrong.
