Tina,

You could just be very lucky. :-)

Given the just-in-time manufacturing and delivery system these days  
for electronics, it would be extremely unlikely that the 4 disks you  
received (and have fail) over a period of months(?) be from the same  
batch. If the disks were consistently bad, the manufacturer would  
have to recall a few million of them by now.

In any case, I would replace the PC if I were in your situation. To  
keep on using the same flakey PC is to tempt Fate again and again.

Just to be on the safe side, I would consider taking the (new) PC off  
your internal network just in case it is virus/adware/network- 
delivered-electronic-pathogen that is causing your problem. Even  
better, never connecting it to any network. Mac's are a bit safer on  
a network but Windows-based machines requires a lot more caution.

Paranoia is good when one deals with computers. By the way, you do do  
backups and store the backups offsite somewhere, right?
