OK.. 1 more obtuse idea...

Get access to a "fresh" computer.  One that has not had anything loaded
except the operating system.  Put this "broken" drive into position D.  Now
boot off the fresh drive, and access drive "D".

If it is the OS. this will pretty much make the problem go away.

BTW, this is a good use for older or smallish drives.  Use them for fresh a
boot device.  Just load the OS on them and leave them in a closet until
needed.
