Nathan,

That is exactly how I was able to work my way out of my situation.  By 
booting my old computer up for one last try, which took several attempts, I 
was able to copy data and photo files to a USB hard drive, which could then 
be connected to my new computer.  I plan to look at other software to find a 
way to automate a backup in the future.
