Until NASCAR got to be the big money machine that it is, the stick and ball press gave it very little attention except for spectacles like Indy. F1 is literally part of the culture in many parts of the world and in the US it seems to be a fascination for the sake of its technology with very few passionate followers (it would be a very rare coffee shop casual topic!). Americans are accustomed to the action of oval tracks and maintaining sight of the circuit and quickly become bored with a road course limited-view experience. The common joke following the initial Indy-based US Gran Prix was, "Was I there? Hell, I saw the pass"! >
