I had heard that motor racing was the #1 spectator drawing sport a few

the stick and ball press gave it very little attention except for 
spectacles like Indy.

F1 is literally part of the culture in many parts of the world and in 
the US it seems to be a fascination for the sake of its technology with 
very few passionate followers (it would be a very rare coffee shop 
casual topic!).  Americans are accustomed to the action of oval tracks 
and maintaining sight of the circuit and quickly become bored with a 
road course limited-view experience.  The common joke following the 
initial Indy-based US Gran Prix was, "Was I there?  Hell, I saw the pass"!
