It counts down to "2" and there is a corresponding 1K beep to ensure that the show's sound and picture are in synch. A holdover from the days when sound and picture were separate (double system) a bit anachronistic nowadays. There is no number "1" or "0", it goes to black at the "2". Each of the numbers appears at one second intervals. Used to give the projectionist time to frame the print in the projector as well as check to see if the sound was playing properly. In a projector with 35mm motion picture film, the sounds precedes the picture by 26 frames. As the projection gate and the sound head cannot occupy the same spot on the film and the film must be looped to allow for the intermittent projector movement to move the film. The picture and sound are offset. First frame is first frame of picture at end of countdown. Sometimes referred to it as a 'leader with a countdown" or a "countdown leader." These terms might differ on the east / west coast in the USA or in England. feli On May 12, 2005, at 8:19 PM, Rei Shinozuka wrote: > sorry, but i could not go to sleep without knowing this: > > to those hollywood veterans out there; what is the industry term > for that countdown number in the middle of a circle, with a > sort of second hand sweeping around 360 degrees as the number counts > down to zero and the footage begins? > > -rei _______________________________________________ Leica Users Group.
