i'd like to second mr colen's recommendation about the pelikan.
i especially like the pelikan demonstrator because, as well as writing
very nicely indeed, it is: #1 transparent, so you can see how much
ink you've got and #2, carries a large internal reservoir instead of
those tiny cartridges or "converters" and holds 2-3 times as much ink.
it's also reasonably priced.

here's a site with nice photos of the Pelikan Demonstrator in its
various colors; my favorite is amber:

as for Rotring, i happened to find the best mechanical pencil i've
ever owned, the rotring 600 .7mm in "lava" finish--absolutely
gorgeous. plus, its the only one i've seen where the entire
lead-holding tip retracts into the body with a push of the button,
ball-point style.

OT, the lava finish is like the finish of the visoflex II or III.
don't bother with mundane silver or black when you have such a pleasing
finish (to the eye and to the touch).

(i hadn't used a mechanical pencil since JR High, but now that i am
back in school, they are handy drawing T accounts and graphing marginal
costs)
