No wonder it looks so brittle :-) USM at 25/50/1 works well to increase the contrast (micro contrast?) but should probably be used sparingly in a high contrast outdoor scene. Further sharpening while downsizing to the web size is definitely asking for trouble :-) I use Fred Miranda's WP PRO plugin to downsize, which basically just do a multi-step downsizing to avoid introducing noise. I found that with color, specifying "low sharpening" as an option works well, whereas for B&W, "no sharpening" works much better. Otherwise, it looks too much sharpening...
