No monetary compensation, but I  ask their permission whenever 
possible. All the street people in my Malaysia series (see gallery 
below) or protesters in my recent work with disabilities (see blog) 
were taken with permission.

  If it's a crowd shot, I don't ask everyone's permission, but that's 
a different ball of wax.

My feeling is that if you are feeling guilty when you're taking the 
photograph (having to resort to subterfuge is a good sign), then you 
most probably should ask permission of the subject first.

  I'm operating under the ethical guidelines of a university 
professor. You should do whatever is appropriate for your own 
standards.
