If it's a crowd shot, I don't ask everyone's permission, but that's a different ball of wax. My feeling is that if you are feeling guilty when you're taking the photograph (having to resort to subterfuge is a good sign), then you most probably should ask permission of the subject first. I'm operating under the ethical guidelines of a university professor. You should do whatever is appropriate for your own standards.
