You'll not catch me with those monsters. If I had a 77mm filter I'd convert it into a sunroof for my Volvo Station wagon. This is not a simple Zeiss to Leica comparison. Two small companies making premium accessories of similar tolerances in similar amounts out of two small German towns paying German workers wages. This is a comparison of Leica made in Solms in small amounts and the highest tolerances and wages and benefits and Cosinas made in Asia in much larger amounts with the workers getting paid a lot less but with the Zeiss name on it and with tolerances which are anyone's guess but probably a lot lower than Leicas. The Leica shades are rectangular and in most cases appear to have undergone a lot more R&D. They are not the much more simple thin round kind with or with out cutaways. When a larger company like Nikon or Canon I notice makes a special purpose lens made more so in "Leica quantities" the lens shade for that lens can cost hundreds of dollars. Just check the B&H site. Nikon HK-29 Lens Hood for 600mm f/4 Manual Focus Lens Price : $ 579.95 Canon ET-155 Lens Hood for EF 400mm f/2.8L IS Lens Price : $ 559.95 Canon ??ET-138 Lens Hood for EF 500mm f/4.0L IS Lens Price : $ 519.95 Nikon ?HK-27 Lens Hood for 400mm f/2.8 D AutoFocus Lens - (Replacement) Price : $ 359.95 ? Pentax ??MA-RA112 112mm Metal Lens Hood (Round) for 300mm f/2.8 FA-Lens Price : $ 279.50 The first Leica hood is the 19 for the R: Leica ?Hood for 19mm f/2.8 R Lens (#11329, 11258) (Replacement) Price $199.95 I'ts the 17th most expensive hood on the list. Sorted high to low. Although it's an ultra wide not for an ultra long I don't think the amount of plastic involved is what the cost is all about. The plastic for any of these hoods cost these companies a couple of bucks. Then there's Tokina ?MH112N Metal Lens Hood (Screw-In) for 300mm f/2.8 Pro & II Auto Focus Lenses Price : $ 149.95 The "Zeiss" made by Cosina ZM hoods coming soon all seem to be for $127. Then the "Voigtl?nder" made by Cosina hood:?? LH-75 Lens Hood (Square) for Voigtl?nder SL 75mm f/2.5, 90mm f/2.5 & 180mm f/4 SLR Lenses Price : $ 79.95 Make things in small amounts and they're much more delicious. You save up for them instead of getting them with pocket change. Lunch at the 21 club for instance. The charter Lear jet alone will cost you several grand.
